Placemaking is not just about the visual arts, but art has the ability to give a visual identity to a place and can help tell a story – a famous example being the Angel of the North, by Antony Gormley, located in Gateshead in the UK. The city council wanted something to act as a landmark in the region and approached the artist to create a sculpture on a prominent position near a busy interchange. The result was one of the largest sculptures ever created in the UK – it stands 20 metres high and 54 metres wide – the sculpture was made by a local steel company who used to cast steel when the town was a mining town. The sculpture is arguably one of the most recognizable public artworks in Europe and was a catalyst for cultural regeneration in the region. In the past people may have looked at Newcastle as a sort of industrial town, but that initiative certainly made people look at Newcastle through a different lens.

There is also a hotel called the Fife Arms, owned by Hauser & Wirth. What was once a very old, dilapidated hotel in Braemar, a stopover for coach tours on the way to Balmoral, has now been renovated and houses an art collection. In a way, they brought it back to its former glory, and the collection is very eclectic and unexpected. Now the village has become a destination in its own right because of this one hotel. The art just makes people want to visit.

I enjoy Venice, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, during the Biennale which is when you have the global art community descend upon this destination. You’re seeing everything from contemporary artists to exhibitions of more established artists, as well as the historic collections that already exist in Venice. It would be hard not to say Venice during the Biennale!

Paris, for obvious reasons, has always been one of the most inspiring and artistic cities. One of the wonderful things about collaborating on Villa le Voile is seeing those French influences from that colonial era. In terms of the architecture and design, Paris was very much a leading city, and you can see some of those influences at Villa le Voile.

Hong Kong, now with the rise of the cultural district and the opening of institutions such as M+ and Palace Museum, which are very impressive, are significant additions to the cultural landscape. Hong Kong has evolved into the big art trading hub in Asia, which means that the most influential contemporary art galleries in the world have a presence in the city, and this wasn’t the case 20 years ago.

What is so exciting working with Villa le Voile is to be part of such a sensitive heritage restoration project. The Villa is being restored, but at the same time is being brought into the 21st century with a new purpose. The art collection has been selected together with members of the Villa le Voile team, so it is more personal, like a collection you would see in someone’s home, rather than a corporate collection. The collection will reflect the multi-cultural influences found in the architecture of the Villa, with artwork from artists in Europe, Asia, and Vietnam. It was interesting that we were all drawn towards a more female collection. It wasn’t something we specifically set out to create, but we have ended up with over 60 percent of the collection being from female artists.

Villa le Voile will also have a number of commissioned site-specific works and it has been a privilege to get to know these artists, some of whom are from Vietnam themselves, such as Le Giang. Her practice looks back at colonial references and traditional Vietnamese crafts, the history of arts and crafts and how that has evolved in Vietnam. She studied in Paris and her work talks about the era during which the villa was built. We envisage this as a collection that will continue to evolve throughout the years.

Inside, however, is a blend of indigenous Vietnamese and Chinese design elements – an amalgamation that reflects its first owner’s preferences and the different ways the villa has been used: as a family residence, as schools, and even as offices to members of the French army. From a stylistic point of view, the villa’s restorers describe the house as eclectic, owing to the hybrid of influences visible in its Vietnamese and Art Nouveau accents and Chinese wall paintings.

Palazzo Spinelli Institute for Art and Restoration, an Italy-based international group of companies that has restored over 18,000 works of art for museums, churches, and other institutions, focused on restoring the original layers of the villa, removing the overpainting, and the recovery of the remaining interior decorations.
Giacomo and Catherine: The state of the villa is that of its organic nature. We’ve uncovered all the overpainting layers so we know exactly the decorative work is now. Our task at the minute is to save and stabilize what is there in terms of its adherence to the wall, and then strictly following a minimal intervention – so we are not repainting, we are restoring – we are trying to recover an impression of the decorative work. We retouch in undertones. We don’t use the same materials or same color tones as the original paint – we use an undertone which is to return an idea or impression of what the artist’s original intention was. A person visiting the villa should have the idea, feeling, or general impression of the original artist’s intentions. The technique is called minimal intervention. We are very sure that the atmosphere and feeling and the impression of the villa will create something that is extremely beautiful.

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM, 4 November 2021 – Slated to open its doors to the public in the 4th quarter of 2022, Villa le Voile – one of Ho Chi Minh City’s last remaining heritage properties – will be reborn as Vietnam’s premier heritage and dining destination, revealing a different side of the country that is complex, contemporary, and continuously evolving. An architectural tour de force blending indigenous Vietnamese, Chinese, and French influences, the two-storey heritage home is one of only 52 Category One heritage buildings in the city and will bring back to life a slice of Saigonese history on Vo Van Tan Street.

The villa was constructed between 1927 and 1930 on a 3,000-square-meter plot of land, located in one of Saigon’s most desirable districts and a preferred residential area of the elite. The 1,500-square-meter villa has since witnessed Saigon’s embattled and transformative history – enduring periods and events such as the French Colonial Rule, the First Indochina War, and the Vietnam War.

With a vision to conserve and rehabilitate the building to its former glory, the villa was acquired in 2015 by Minerva Corporation, which has since invested over US$20 million into the building’s restoration alone. Villa le Voile appointed renowned specialists Palazzo Spinelli Institute for Art and Restoration from Italy and Stonewest from the UK, whose respective body of work have included country estates, cathedrals, and other historical and cultural institutions around, to undertake a formidable full-scale restoration of the heritage property. In line with the Villa’s mission to involve with the local community, both specialists engaged nearly 200 workers and students from the Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (HUTECH), providing an imprint of learning and continuation for restoration and adaptation of heritage assets.

Villa le Voile embraces its location’s vibrant history while offering a glimpse into the city’s future as a burgeoning international destination. Its name is inspired by voile (French for “veil”), symbolizing its extensive seven-year journey of studies and restoration – as well as the many layers of history unveiled in the process, the findings of which will be on permanent exhibit at the villa.

Villa le Voile will present the finest authentic expressions in dining and culture in the heart of Saigon. Comprised of a main villa, a flexible space for temporary exhibitions and pop-up events, and an outdoor landscape area, the villa will house three must-visit dining destinations punctuated by artistic spirit, cultural sensitivity, and heritage promotion in order to create unforgettable experiences for locals and visitors alike.

A place for inspiration, community, and cultural exploration, Villa le Voile will serve as a venue for exchange and understanding of Vietnam through exhibitions, workshops, and other programs to take place year-round. Says Nguyen Vu Anh Thi, General Director of Minerva Corporation, “We are fully committed to the promotion and preservation of heritage in Vietnam, beginning with Villa le Voile. We continue to strive for an authentic reflection of Saigon while elevating our standards for culture and dining.”

Inside, however, is a blend of indigenous Vietnamese and Chinese design elements (architectural value in ho chi minh city) – an amalgamation that (reflects the) first owner’s preferences and the different ways the villa has been used, as a family residence, as schools, and even as offices to members of the French army.

From a stylistic point of view, the villa’s restorers describe the house as having an eclectic architecture in Saigon, owing to the hybrid of influences visible in its Vietnamese and Art Nouveau accents and Chinese wall paintings.

The villa also incorporates techniques used to adapt to local conditions – for instance, floors are built higher than the ground to avoid thermal radiation; the roof houses an attic, which serves to insulate the building.

Thoroughly detailed elements also include balcony and staircase railings from the French steel smithing technique of the late 1800s and early 1900s, considered highly modern during that time.

A lasting collaboration

The long process has proven to be rewarding in more ways than one. Both Palazzo Spinelli and Stonewest were determined to “leave a trace” and provide an imprint of continuation, involving local institutions such as the Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (HUTECH) and training nearly 200 local students and workers throughout the project’s various stages in order to maintain a true, tangible engagement with the local community.

“It’s not only a question of conservation and restoration, it is a question of giving to the future generations – giving them an idea of the importance of cultural heritage,” says Emanuele Amodei, President of Palazzo Spinelli.

“Restoration is interpretation. One of our scientific scopes is to define a model of restoration that can be applied to the country and the new generation that can be used as a basis to work on similar activities. We strongly believe that transferring knowledge and competence in terms of conservation and restoration are very much connected.”

Mr. Nguyen, too, stresses that the adaptation process is equally important as the journey of restoration. Key to successful adaptation is local expertise which had not existed at the time. “The result is essentially a balanced view of what is the most appropriate for a Vietnamese context, taking equal importance of the past and the future,” Mr. Nguyen says. “What we are leaving behind is not only what is visible in the villa, or the built heritage, but a set of international best practices in many areas regarding heritage assets, including construction management, MEP systems, and the decision-making process.”

Villa le Voile is slated to open its doors to the public in Q4 of 2022, housing three dining concepts alongside a roving program of exhibitions, installations, and cultural events.
